A friend asked me how much I wanted for my 2002 Subaru WRX
the other day (August 25th, 2003 to be exact) which got me thinking. What is this car worth? I looked it up
and came up with my numbers. But, I was also thinking what it would be worth as a trade-in for an STI. I called a few local
shops in town which were over $2,000 off what I would expect for the car and would take 2 months
to get the specific STI that I would want (white/silver with compass mirror, security system, and turbo guage). I then looked for the car that I wanted and
was available at a lot. I looked throughout the whole northwest. I actually found one in
Salem, Oregon (where my sister lives). I called them and inquired about the car. After
the initial sales pitch of "We always get 2-3 thousand dollars over MSRP", I told them
to forget it. After a second the saleman went to talk to his boss and came back with an MSRP offer.
OK. The first part was done, now what would they give me for my trade in. After a few phone calls back and forth, I told them what I wanted. Surprisingly enough, they agreed. So, over Labor Day weekend me, my wife and daughter took the 2002 WRX to Salem, Oregon and traded it in for the STI. Once we got there, we were out the door in less than an hour. A very simple transaction.
